Random Happenings

Sorry Johnny and I have been MIA recently...a thousand apologies oh patient one (10 points to whoever knows what Disney classic that quote is from).

I have a couple of random things on my mind right now, and seeing how I have a million other things I should be doing nothing else to do, I will share them with you all :)

1. Johnny and I had dinner at Rocky's...a small hole-in-the-wall Italian place. Since we were dying for a date night, we high-tailed it out of work yesterday and headed over there. It's run by an Italian family, which was evident by the 3 generations of people seating customers, taking orders, and serving. I saw a teenage girl kiss her grandmother and grandfather on the cheek when leaving, and my heart melted. The food also melted my waistline. Each meal was around $5- just standard pasta and red sauce, with the option to add a meatball or sausage. Oh. My. Land. Delicious. There were lots of old Italian men having dinner, and Johnny is now convinced that he and his best friend Fuser (who is 100% Italian, while Johnny is more of a wanna-be) need to start coming here on a regular basis to hang out with the old men I love him. P.S. Fuser is a nickname-don't ask.

2. My friend from My Green Orchard posted this quote on one of her recent blogs:

(Foer is describing a conversation he had with his grandmother about surviving World War I.)

-“The worst is got was near the end. A lot of people died right at the end, and I didn’t know if I could make it another day. A farmer, a Russian, God bless him, he saw my condition, and he went into the house and came out with a piece of meat for me.”
-“He saved your life.”
-“I didn’t eat it.”
-“You didn’t eat it?”
-“It was pork. I wouldn’t eat pork.”
-“Why?”
-“What do you mean why?”
-“What, because it wasn’t kosher?”
-“Of course.”
-“But not even to save your life?”
-“If nothing matters, there’s nothing to save.”

I'm not sure what to say about this quote. It's convicting me in ways that I haven't fully worked out yet. I think it's beautiful, and I pray I can live a life of this much purpose and conviction.

3. I was in San Diego with said friend from My Green Orchard for a work conference. The table set up next to ours was a table from Heavenly Treasures. They sell amazing jewelry, household items, and other fun gifts that support projects in third world countries all over the world. Check out their website!

4. My husband's roommate from college (Shizzle, again with the names...), came to visit us today. Shizzle asked us, "What is the one thing that makes your marriage work? What's the most important thing you guys live by to make it work every day?" I was thrown off, probably because I worked a 60 hour week this week am a little tired, so Johnny chimed in with a great answer. He referenced The Five Love Languages book by Gary Chapman.

Side note: there are five love languages-Quality Time, Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, and Gifts. Everyone has a different language for giving and receiving love. It really is an amazing book. And you don't have to be married or in a relationship to appreciate it. Please check out their website and purchase the book immediately.

When Glen realized my number one is quality time, he stopped focusing on the others as much as he used to, and focused in on my number one. That way, his efforts were met with huge waves of gratitude from his wife, because I was feeling over-the-top loved by my husband. Which, in turn, made me excited to pour out love in the form of his love languages. Make sense? Anyway, Johnny hit the nail on the head (is that the saying??? oh well). That book, and the concepts we learned through it, have really shaped our marriage.

I am heading to take a nap. I need it. I deserve it. I am so flipping exhausted. Johnny is watching a soccer game with Shizzle, which leaves me in a quiet house with a couch and blanket calling my name.
